Welcome Melissa Burke to our Midtown Art Wall!
Her beautiful pieces use matte acrylic paint and gold leafing on raw canvas and wood panels. Keep an eye on them as you move around the shop, and the lighting on the gold leafing will change as it catches light in different ways!
We caught up with Melissa for some Q&A:
Tell us about what inspired the pieces for this collection?
I was pregnant with my son and this idea came to me that I couldn’t get out of my head! I signed up for a first Friday show and presented 13 different pieces and most of them sold at that first show. That’s when I knew I was on to something special.
Tell us a bit about yourself as an artist?
I’ve always been a creative person, but I never felt like I was an “artist” until that first first Friday show. I do art for my own soul. Art has been one of the ways that I healed after experiencing burnout and it’s been an essential practice ever since.
What else would you like to share about your process, drive or artistic journey?
I make art usually because I love it. Most versions of what I create spend time as artwork in my own home. It’s fun to be able to have an idea and make it a reality and problem solve as I go. The process is just as much fun as the finished product.
I’m deeply inspired by the mountains we have here in Alaska. All of my pieces are depictions of actual mountains in our state. One of the things I love about Alaska is the endless fodder for inspiration!
Favorite Wild Scoops flavor?
Rhubarb Crumble. There isn’t a better flavor in the world!
Fun Fact?
Melissa spent the last two summers as a campground host with Chugiak State Parks and used the host cabin this summer as an art studio to make all the pieces you see in the display!
How can we follow your art?
@artbymelissaburke
The majority of my creations are kept as works of art in my own house. Being able to take a concept, turn it into a reality, and solve problems along the way is enjoyable. geometry dash world
