Welcome Sarah Freije to our Midtown Art Wall!
Sarah Freije’s collection inspired by winter, coziness, and ice cream is the newest to grace our walls! Sarah’s pieces use a variety of media including gouache, watercolor, acrylic, and digital art. We love the sense of comfort that her pieces evoke and we hope you’ll stop by and check it out soon!
We caught up with Sarah for some Q&A:
Tell us about what inspired the pieces for this collection?
Winter in Alaska is definitely my inspiration. This time of year can be very harsh, but it can also be so cozy and comforting. I think we can take a note from Mother Nature and slow down a bit this time of year. I hope this collection inspires a feeling of calm, comfort, and a peacefulness that comes with embracing a slower pace.
Tell us a bit about yourself as an artist?
Art is life and when I’m not creating something, I feel cuckoo! I would say my process involves seeing something shiny, spending lots of money on super niche art supplies, and getting hyper-fixated on a new medium for a while. My desk is constantly buried in supplies. In the last few years, I’ve developed a love for gouache, beading, alcohol inks, knitting and more. I’m also super-lucky that my full-time job as a photographer allows me to flex my creative muscles all the time.
What else would you like to share about your process, drive, or artistic journey?
I started painting for the first time during lockdown. I had a one-year-old and a three-year-old at the time, and I was running on so much anxiety and exhaustion. Painting after bedtime was one thing I could do to unwind and turn off my brain. I was immediately drawn to cute little creatures doing cozy things because I was desperately craving a world of goodness and whimsy. They are still my favorite thing to paint.
Favorite Wild Scoops flavor?
Xtra-Toff! Oh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! It’s a flavor that hasn’t been around for awhile, but I still dream about it. Coffee, toffee, chocolate!? You can’t go wrong with that!
Fun fact?
I was just named Best Photographer in Best of Alaska by ADN and I’m so excited! It was an honor to be nominated and absolutely surreal to have won!
